Fifty Years Ago (1952)
Hometown cowboy Jack Chase won the bareback riding at the 1952 Grant Co. Fair rodeo held September 4th at Carson, N.D. Winners: BB Chase; SB - George Cronan, Lark; Steer Riding Dick Balliet, Shields; CR Merle Olson, Almont; BAR Mrs. Art Feland, Almont; Wild Horse Race Dick Bond, Almont; Wild Cow Milking George Bruington, Lark. Stevenson stock.
At the 1952 Steele Saddle Club rodeo held Sunday, October 12th, former Kidder Co. resident Dean Armstrong of Sentinel Butte topped the saddle bronc riding event. Results: BB Jim Tescher, Medora; SB Armstrong; CR Dick Bond, Almont; BAR Evelyn Neuens, Bismarck; Wild Horse Race Jake Larson, Almont; Wild Cow Milking Larson/Bond.
Forty Years Ago (1962)
At the 1962 Minot Y Camp RCA rodeo, October 5-7th, M.G. Olson of Glen Ullin, N.D. was the top money winner. Tom Tescher of Sentinel Butte was the runner-up winner in the steer wrestling average and placed in two rounds of the saddle bronc riding. Fettig stock.
Miss Rodeo North Dakota Joan Hecker of Belfield and her horse, "Speedy," won their third North Dakota Rodeo Association barrel racing championship, and then traveled to the 1962 Miss Rodeo America pageant held November 27-30th at Las Vegas.
Thirty Years Ago (1972)
After the end of the 1972 North Dakota Rodeo Association Finals held September 2-3rd in New Town, Gayle Meyer of Watford City became the NDRA s first goat-tying event champion. Sixteen-year old cowboy and future national high school rodeo champion Darrell Hermanson of Kathryn, N.D. won the NDRA bull riding title.
Bob Aber rodeo stock traveling to the 1972 National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City included "Defender" and "Van Horn" in the bareback riding event and "Old Shep" and "Miss Alimony" in the saddle bronc riding.
Twenty Years Ago (1982)
At the 1982 Beulah Cowboys Reunion NDRA rodeo held September 11-12th, Fort Berthold Indian cowboys J.D. Youngbird and Frank White Calf won the team roping event. Other winners: BB Scott Gress, Richardton; SB Don Tescher, Medora; BR Luke Kuhn, Sheyenne; CR Speedy Bruce, New Town; SW John Irwin, Minot; BAR Peggy Comeau, Solen; BRKA Elayne Appledoorn, Gladstone; GT Dee Spiller, Belfield; TR Youngbird/White Calf. Mosbrucker/Berger stock.
Former state high school champion Brad Gjermundson of Marshall, N.D. finished as the 1982 PRCA world saddle bronc runner-up champion ($74,782) behind three-time world champion Monty Henson of Mesquite, Texas. He also finished second in the Winston Rodeo Series.
Ten Years Ago (1992)
Ashley Ehr of Minot was named Miss Rodeo North Dakota at the MRND pageant held in conjunction with the 1992 PRCA Badlands Circuit Finals.
Despite a bruising wreck during the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Wayne Herman of Dickinson, N.D. "cowboyed-up" to earn $53,894 and capture the 1992 PRCA world bareback championship title with $122,949 in year.
