Hall of Fame Inductions Set for August 3
Nine new inductees will be formally inducted into the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame Hall of Honoree on Saturday, August 3 in Medora. The induction ceremony will be held at the Tjaden Terrace and will begin at 12:30 p.m. (MDT) with entertainment. The induction program begins promptly at 1:00 p.m. Additional activities will be held in conjunction with the Champions Ride Rodeo at the Home on the Range the following day, Sunday, August 4.
North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame Executive Director Darrell Dorgan says this year's group of inductees includes seven individuals, one ranch, and a famous bucking horse. He notes, "Two women are among the nine new inductees who will join 47 others who've been inducted since1998. The inductees will be honored in a special Hall of Honorees that will be the centerpiece of the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame, Center of Western Heritage and Cultures: Native American, Ranching and Rodeo that will be built in Medora North Dakota. We hope to open the Hall of Fame and it's Hall of Honorees in Medora the spring of 2004."
National Public Radio personality and Thomas Jefferson scholar Clay Jenkinson will be the speaker. Jenkinson, a native of Dickinson, North Dakota, is also a nationally recognized and critically acclaimed National Humanities Scholar and Meriwether Lewis re-enactor.
In the Modern-era Rodeo Division, Trustees selected Dale Jorgenson of Watford City. In the Pre-1940 Rodeo Division, Trustees selected George Bruington of Mandan and Scott Gore of Grassy Butte.
In the Pre-1940 Ranching Division, Trustees selected Frieda Bohnsack, of Ransom County and William Lemuel "Bill" Taylor was of Dunn Center.
In the Modern-era Ranching Division Trustees selected Harris Goldsberry of Beach.
In the Ranch Division Trustees selected The Birdhead Ranch of McKenzie County.
In the Rodeo Livestock Division, Trustees selected the legendary bucking horse Figure Four.
In the Leaders of Rodeo and Ranching Division, Trustees selected Pearl Cullen who now lives in Bismarck.
So far, the Hall of Fame has financial commitments of nearly $1.8 million and a building site in the city of Medora. Dorgan says, "A final capital fundraising drive will begin soon, "It's hoped commitments for the remainder of the money needed to build the $3 million dollar facility and create and endowment will be raised by December and ground breaking and construction work can get underway. With luck, the doors will open the summer of 2004 to coincide with the national activities to commemorate the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition."
Work on the NDCHF began with a Dickinson organizational meeting six years ago. More than a thousand people from across the county have become charter and annual members. Contributions for the project may be sent to The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame, 1110 College Drive #216, Bismarck, North Dakota 58501.
